The installations presented at the Zagreb Biennale are based on two important branches of research developed at CRM: the propagation of acoustic waves (Holophones) and the vibrational characteristics of matter (Planephones®).


Holophones - sound projectors)
This installation allocated around the HDLU building is realized with Holophones - sound projectors.
Holophones are multiphonic systems (Lupone 1999), presented for the first time on the occasion of MUSICA SCIENZA 2000 in Rome in order to realize a specific sound spatialization design defined as "wavefront sculpture". The Holophones can in fact be controlled by computer and give the composer the possibility of realizing creative modulations of the sound irradiation.
This installation has been designed so as to obtain an extremely detailed diffusion of the music despite the extensive area and the complex layout of the space (the place) which it covers.
The public can either move around or stop at the various points of installation, choosing for listening the most congenial arrangement and fixing their attention on the trajectories of the sound and its points of convergence.
An important and heterogeneous musical presence characterizes this presentation, since the "widespread sound" installation presents works by Italian composers of various generations and great creative talent. Some works will be designed expressly for this occasion and their authors have modelled the sound space coherently to the installation.

Margherita di metallo (Metal daisy)

Metal daisy  is an art sound installation based on Planofoni®, version expecially designed for the 24th Zagreb Biennale (CRM, Rome 2007)
Planephones are vibrating systems based on panels in different materials and different forms.
Planephones are not loud speakers, they diffuse sound but with characteristics depending on the structure of matter, on the design geometries, on the directions and curves of the surfaces, on their volumes.
They differ from conventional sound diffusion systems, in that the sound acquires the timbrical quality of the material employed and, in addition, by diffusing the sound homogeneously along the surface, permits designing the acoustic space according to the architectural space.    
The term "Planephone" means 'a plane that transmits sound' and was conceived to achieve two goals: the uniform diffusion of sound in space; the music control of vibrational qualities of matter.
Conceived first as "art installations" (Lupone 1997) in the acoustic design of the concert halls, in museum and especially as instruments for music composition and diffusion of sound in contemporary instrumental and electronic works, they have been appreciated by artists and musicians who have created "works of art" which integrate form, matter, sound, music language and expression.  
For the first time works which integrate the relevant aspects of sound and visual perception are conceived thus creating new modes of fruition of the work of art.
The Metal daisy attempts to create a resonating and concentrating ambience where people can listen to the music composed by Laura Bianchini and Michelangelo Lupone moving in the space or sitting at the floor.
